Richard was born on December 24, 1928 in San Francisco, CA to Robert and Clara (McDonough) Brougham. He was the elder brother of sister Lorraine who had predeceased him in 2017.
Richard attended grammar school, high school and college in San Francisco until June 1950, when he received his Associate of Arts degree from City College.
Richard joined the United States Army in 1951 and was stationed in Korea serving as medical technician in the Korean War. Upon completing his tour, he returned stateside and studied at the University of New Mexico where he received his Bachelor of Arts in 1960 and Master of Arts in 1965. Richard served in the United States Army for nearly 27 years, retiring on December 31, 1977 as Sergeant First Class. He proudly served in two wars, Korean War and Vietnam War as a Radiologic Medical Technologist. His final station was at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, where he was an Army X-ray Technologist and Instructor. After military retirement, Richard’s love of philosophy drove him to study and receive his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of New Mexico in December 1988.
In August 2011, Richard retired from San Antonio College where he had been Professor Emeritus in the Philosophy Department for many years. His interests were metaphysics of time, history of ideas, conceptual foundation of biological evolution, and world religions. Richard loved reading so much that he had a plaque on his desk stating, “I cannot live without books – Thomas Jefferson.” Richard was a kind and gentle soul who cared about the quiet and simple things in life.
He is survived by his wife, Kamprem Brougham, of 53 years and three daughters, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Several times every day he would say his favorite Thai words to his wife “Rak, mak, mak,” meaning “Love you very much”.
